Ousmane Sonko unveils pastef’s ideological vision ahead of inaugural congress

Just days before the inaugural ordinary congress of the Patriots of Senegal for Work, Ethics, and Fraternity (PASTEF), scheduled for Saturday, June 6, 2026, Secretary-General Ousmane Sonko released an extensive statement. This significant publication outlined the movement’s historical journey and articulated the ambitious goals for the upcoming assembly.

Within his comprehensive text, the former Prime Minister adopts a dual perspective. He acts as the party’s founder, recounting PASTEF’s origins in 2014, established « without financial resources » or « networks of influence. » Concurrently, he serves as a strategist, posing the critical question of post-electoral success. Sonko asserted that « history demonstrates political shifts can be neutralized if they lack clear doctrine, robust organization, or a long-term strategy, » highlighting a key aspect of African politics.

Sonko’s statement traces a compelling narrative arc, spanning the popular mobilizations from 2021 to 2024—which he describes as « one of the most intense periods in Senegal’s recent history »—leading up to the June 2026 congress. He envisions this event as a pivotal moment, transforming PASTEF from a « movement of rupture » into a « fully organized political party. » Delegates from both national sections and the diaspora will convene to ratify an ideological charter, a strategic orientation document, party theses, and a general resolution.

The central thread weaving through the entire document is the concept of sovereignty. Sonko meticulously defines this not merely as a slogan, but as « a method of governance Africa can embrace, » encompassing critical areas such as natural resources, budgetary decisions, agricultural policy, the educational system, and Senegal’s global standing. He further integrates a cultural dimension, emphasizing the promotion of national languages, the reappropriation of history, mastery of technology, and a profound pan-African ambition: to link national sovereignty with comprehensive economic and scientific integration across the African continent.

Released amid palpable tensions within the executive branch and following his own removal from government, Sonko’s tribune serves as a powerful declaration. It signals that PASTEF’s founder remains determined to shape the party’s ideological direction, irrespective of prevailing institutional challenges, underscoring the dynamic nature of society Africa.
