Olympique Lyonnais’s request for Ligue 1 match postponement against Toulouse rejected by LFP

Olympique Lyonnais sought to reschedule their Ligue 1 season opener in Toulouse, slated for August 22, due to a potential Champions League playoff. However, the LFP has declined this request.

The friction between the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) and Olympique Lyonnais (OL) appears to be escalating even before the season’s official kickoff. Lyon’s management approached the professional football league to request a delay for their initial Ligue 1 fixture against Toulouse FC on August 22. The primary justification for this appeal was the possibility that the match would fall squarely between the two legs of a crucial Champions League playoff, should OL advance to that stage.

This was deemed a valid concern by the Lyonnais board, prompting them to formally submit their request to the LFP in writing.

To bolster their case, OL invoked the “PSG precedent,” emphasizing the broader interests of French football. Paris Saint-Germain had previously received multiple fixture postponements last season, allowing them ample preparation time for their demanding European commitments.

Potential Champions League playoff clashes with Ligue 1 schedule for OL

Given these circumstances, and in the spirit of sporting equity, the seven-time French champions fully anticipated a favorable response from the League.

Nevertheless, the LFP’s Board of Directors, to the surprise of many, rejected the possibility of a schedule alteration. The governing body firmly stated its unwillingness to disrupt the televised programming agenda of Ligue 1, especially not from the very first matchday.

This decision marks an early calendar challenge for coach Paulo Fonseca and his squad. The Gones will now face a demanding late August schedule as they strive for a coveted spot in the Champions League.
