Niger faces surge in displaced persons amid armed group threats

A significant influx of displaced persons has been reported by local sources in the western Niger, particularly in the town of Téra. The community is overwhelmed by newly arrived displaced individuals from villages in the southern part of the region, who have sought refuge since late last month.
The village of Diagourou is rapidly emptying as armed groups, including the Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM), have pressured residents to leave. Located just ten kilometers from Téra, Diagourou sits on the right bank of the Niger River within the tri-border area shared by Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger. This volatile region is also targeted by the Islamic State in the Sahel (ISS).
Displaced persons face dire living conditions
Testimonies reveal that displaced individuals in Téra are enduring harsh conditions. Many families, including women and children, are exposed to the elements, sheltering in vacant plots or relying on host families for accommodation.
While precise figures remain unavailable for the latest waves of displacement, the villages in Diagourou are believed to house thousands of affected individuals.
