Morocco and Benin lead pivotal Atlantic African states forum in Cotonou
The 7th ministerial meeting of the Processus des États Africains Atlantiques (PEAA) kicked off this Monday in Cotonou, Benin, under the joint chairmanship of the Kingdom of Morocco and the Republic of Benin. The gathering, centered on fostering deeper ties among Atlantic-facing African nations, aligns with His Majesty King Mohammed VI’s vision of a shared Atlantic African space marked by peace, stability, and inclusive prosperity.
Delegations outline strategic priorities for regional integration
The Moroccan delegation, led by Mohamed Methqal, Ambassador and Director-General of the Moroccan Agency for International Cooperation (AMCI), included key figures such as Tarik Iziraren, Permanent Secretary of the PEAA, Rachid Rguibi, Morocco’s Ambassador to Benin, alongside senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans Residing Abroad.
A roadmap for sustainable maritime and economic cooperation
Since its inception in Rabat in June 2022, the PEAA has made significant strides, including the establishment of a permanent secretariat in Rabat, the formation of thematic working groups, and the adoption of a comprehensive action plan. This plan prioritizes political dialogue, maritime security, blue economy, connectivity, energy transition, and marine environmental protection.
The Cotonou meeting builds on previous sessions held in Rabat, New York, and Praia, reinforcing collaboration among member states to advance sustainable development, maritime governance, and mutually beneficial co-development across Africa’s Atlantic coastline.
Strengthening Africa’s Atlantic identity
This initiative underscores a growing commitment among African nations to harness their shared Atlantic heritage for economic resilience and regional cohesion. By pooling resources and expertise, the PEAA aims to position Africa as a unified force in global maritime and environmental governance.
