Maroc golfe forum urges stronger funding for youth innovation projects
Discussions at the Morocco-Gulf Youth Economic Empowerment Forum concluded in Casablanca this week, culminating in a call for enhanced financial mechanisms to support youth-led innovative projects. The focus spans three key sectors: green, blue, and digital economies, aiming to catalyze sustainable economic growth and social progress.
The three-day event, co-organized by the Moroccan Ministry of Youth, Culture and Communication and the General Secretariat of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), brought together nearly 100 participants. This diverse assembly included young entrepreneurs, institutional leaders, industry experts, and ecosystem stakeholders from Morocco and Gulf nations.
Youth empowerment as a cornerstone for sustainable development
Ahmed Aboukrim, Chair of the Forum’s Scientific Committee, highlighted the pivotal role of youth economic and social empowerment in addressing contemporary challenges. He emphasized that this empowerment, when strategically integrated with education, employability, entrepreneurship, and innovation, serves as a linchpin for achieving sustainable development goals and adapting to rapid economic, social, and technological transformations.
The collective discussions underscored the urgency of adopting holistic strategies that not only foster skill development but also enhance the competitiveness of national economies through targeted investments in human capital.
Four high-impact sectors identified for youth-led growth
The forum’s workshops delved into four strategic sectors poised to drive economic self-reliance among young people:
- Green economy: Sustainable practices and circular economic models to preserve natural resources.
- Artificial intelligence and digital transformation: Leveraging technology to create scalable solutions and new economic opportunities.
- Renewable energy and green hydrogen: Transitioning toward clean energy to meet future demand and reduce carbon footprints.
- Blue economy and water resources: Sustainable management and innovation in aquatic and marine-based industries.
Key recommendations for fostering innovation and collaboration
The forum’s outcome included actionable proposals such as establishing dedicated funding platforms for youth-led initiatives in the green, blue, and digital sectors. Other recommendations called for strengthening joint research and training programs, creating specialized incubators, and developing shared metrics to evaluate the impact of these initiatives on youth employment, innovation, and sustainable development.
Participants emphasized that the complementary strengths of Morocco and Gulf states—ranging from resource availability to investment capacity and technical expertise—create an ideal environment for a regional model of cooperation. This model would prioritize innovation, knowledge-based economies, and sustainable development, all aimed at empowering the youth across the region.
Gulf nations laud Morocco’s leadership in fostering regional cooperation
Salma Khalifa Al Ghafli, Head of the United Arab Emirates delegation, commended Morocco’s exceptional organizational efforts and hospitality during the forum. She praised the deep fraternal ties binding Morocco and GCC member states, describing the event as a vital platform for sharing insights and building partnerships that advance youth economic and social empowerment.
She reaffirmed that investing in youth is an investment in the future of nations, highlighting the critical role of such forums in nurturing cross-border collaboration and sustainable growth.
The closing ceremony concluded with a tribute to the heads of delegations from GCC countries and representatives of diplomatic missions from participating nations. The recognition honored their contributions to the forum’s success and their commitment to strengthening Morocco-GCC cooperation in youth development and economic progress.
