Mali’s health system fortified with new gavi-funded 4×4 vehicles

In a significant move to enhance healthcare accessibility across Mali, the Ministry of Health and Social Development officially received 39 robust 4×4 all-terrain vehicles. This crucial delivery, which took place on Thursday, February 5, 2026, aims to bolster the nation’s health infrastructure and expand access to vital health services, particularly vaccination programs, in the country’s most vulnerable and hard-to-reach communities. The handover ceremony was conducted at the Ministry of Health’s headquarters within Bamako’s Cité administrative.

These vehicles represent an investment valued at 689 million CFA francs. According to Assa Badiallo Touré, the Minister of Health, this consignment is a direct outcome of the robust and productive collaboration between her ministry and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. Minister Touré emphasized that this donation is part of an ongoing commitment, noting, “This handover is neither the first nor will it be the last.” She recalled that in 2023, 68 vehicles were previously acquired with World Bank funding to support COVID-19 vaccination efforts, and further equipment deliveries are anticipated throughout 2026.

Addressing the attendees, the Minister affirmed, “These new vehicles will significantly boost the operational capabilities of our health facilities in monitoring health interventions, particularly those related to immunization.” She urged all beneficiaries and drivers to ensure diligent maintenance of the vehicles, stressing the critical importance of preserving these assets amidst current challenges as the ministry continues its efforts to expand its service vehicle fleet.

Representing the technical and financial partners, Fosca Giulidori, the UNICEF representative in Mali, underscored the profound symbolism of the event. She stated, “Far more than a simple transfer of keys, this event signifies a powerful act of international solidarity, embodying Gavi’s unwavering support to accelerate global vaccination efforts and ensure equitable access to essential vaccines.

Ms. Giulidori further elaborated that these 39 vehicles are akin to vital arteries for the Malian health system. They will be instrumental in transporting vaccines and other medical supplies, adhering strictly to standards, to the most isolated health centers. Additionally, they will facilitate the deployment of mobile health teams to communities that are otherwise difficult to access, thereby strengthening immunization campaigns, nutritional monitoring, and other critical care services benefiting the population at large.
