Mali military regains control in key battle zones against armed groups

The Malian Armed Forces have declared a decisive shift in the conflict, asserting full operational control over territories previously contested by armed factions in the northern and central regions. This announcement follows a series of intense clashes involving the National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad (MNLA) in the north and the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), an Al-Qaeda affiliate, in the center and south.

Strategic reinforcements and sustained resistance

In a recent official statement, the Malian military detailed renewed fighting in Anifif, located 110 kilometers southeast of Kidal, where reinforcements had reportedly been deployed to bolster MNLA positions. The armed forces emphasized their unwavering commitment, declaring: “Under these renewed pressures, our troops have engaged with relentless determination, executing coordinated operations throughout the day with precision and discipline.”

Reaffirming national sovereignty

The military reaffirmed its resolve to safeguard Mali’s territorial integrity and protect civilian populations. The statement underscored the army’s confidence in its capacity to neutralize hostile forces and restore stability across the nation’s borders. “We possess absolute faith in the capability of the Malian Armed Forces to defend our nation, its people, and its sovereignty,” the communiqué stated.

MNLA leadership denies casualties

In response to claims of leadership losses, the MNLA’s spokesperson, Mohamed Mouloud Ramadan, refuted reports suggesting the death of its commander, Mbarek Ag Akli. Ramadan confirmed that Ag Akli remains actively leading military operations in northern Mali, dismissing rumors as unfounded.
