Mali army regains control in key combat zones against armed groups

The Malian Armed Forces (FAMA) have declared a decisive shift in momentum, asserting full operational control over regions previously targeted by coordinated offensives from the Azawad Liberation Front in northern Mali and the Support Group for Islam and Muslims (JNIM)—an Al-Qaeda affiliate—across central and southern areas.

In an official statement, the FAMA reported sustained clashes on Sunday near Anifif, located in the northeast, approximately 110 kilometers south of Kidal. The confrontation followed the arrival of additional personnel and equipment dispatched to reinforce the Azawad Liberation Front’s positions.

The military communiqué emphasized the resilience of Malian forces, stating: “Confronted with renewed pressure, our units advanced with unwavering determination, sustaining combat operations throughout the day with discipline and courage.” The statement reaffirmed total confidence in the FAMA’s ability to safeguard national unity, protect civilians, and dismantle hostile factions.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the Azawad Liberation Front, Mohamed Mouloud Ramadan, had earlier claimed operational dominance in Anifif following the resumption of hostilities. He also categorically denied reports of the death of the Front’s leader, Mbarek Ag Akli, asserting that the commander remains actively engaged in directing military operations across northern Mali.
