Mali’s Bold Step: 15 New Hospitals to Revolutionize Healthcare Nationwide

Bamako, November 2025 — President Assimi GOÏTA has inaugurated a landmark initiative to revamp Mali’s healthcare infrastructure. During a ceremonial event at the Korofina Reference Health Center in Bamako’s Commune I, the President laid the foundation stone for what will become the largest hospital modernization drive in the country’s history.

The Presidential Urgent Healthcare Project, as outlined by Colonel-Major Assa Badiallo TOURÉ, Minister of Health and Social Development, builds on the December 2024 National Health Summit recommendations. These discussions highlighted pressing needs: equitable access to medical services and elevated care standards across all regions of Mali.

Comprehensive Hospital Upgrade: Three Strategic Pillars

This transformative project is structured around three core components, each designed to address critical gaps in Mali’s healthcare system:

  • District Hospital Conversions in Bamako: Seven existing Reference Health Centers (CSREF) in Bamako’s districts will be upgraded into full-fledged district hospitals, enhancing local healthcare capacity.
  • New District Facilities in Bla and Kangaba: Two brand-new district hospitals will be constructed in these strategic locations to serve underserved communities.
  • Regional Hospital Development: Modern healthcare hubs will rise in San, Koutiala, Bougouni, Dioïla, Nioro, Bandiagara, and Koulikoro, equipped to handle complex medical cases and specialized treatments.

The upgraded facilities will feature state-of-the-art medical equipment, expanded inpatient wards, and specialized units—including hemodialysis services for hospitals in Bamako’s 1st and 6th arrondissements. The entire initiative is fully funded by Mali’s national budget, with construction timelines set at 12 months for Bamako projects and 24 months for regional developments.

Ensuring Timely Delivery and Public Benefit

President GOÏTA emphasized the project’s human-centric vision during the launch. Beyond infrastructure, the initiative aims to reduce medical evacuations, alleviate congestion in overburdened facilities, and bring high-quality healthcare closer to Mali’s citizens. He tasked the Health Minister with ensuring uninterrupted public services during construction and strict adherence to project deadlines.

The modernization drive aligns with Mali’s broader development goals, recognizing health as a cornerstone for economic and social progress. As these hospitals take shape, they promise to redefine healthcare delivery in West Africa’s Sahel region.
