Mali intensifies hunt for militant leaders with substantial financial rewards

Mali’s transitional government has initiated a robust program, announcing on Thursday the provision of significant financial incentives to any individual who can furnish actionable intelligence leading to the apprehension of those suspected of orchestrating attacks against citizens and vital infrastructure across the nation.

Authorities have specified a substantial reward of two billion CFA francs (approximately 3.55 million US dollars) for information directly resulting in the location of Iyad Ag Gali, the prominent leader of the group known as “Nasra al-Islam wal-Muslimin” (JNIM). Furthermore, varying, albeit lesser, financial rewards have been designated for intelligence pertaining to several other high-value targets currently sought by security forces.

Among the individuals on the expanded wanted list is El Ghabas Ag Antala, a recognized figure within the Tuareg separatist movements operating in Mali’s northern regions.

This decisive action by the Malian government comes in the wake of a series of devastating assaults in April, attributed to groups with affiliations to Al-Qaida. These attacks, according to official accounts, tragically resulted in the death of the nation’s defense minister and caused injuries to other senior officials. The violence sparked widespread clashes across the expansive desert territories of the north, raising considerable alarm about the potential for further territorial gains by armed groups.

The strategic decision was officially formalized in Bamako, bearing the signature of Major General Daoud Ali Mohamedine, who currently serves as Mali’s Minister of Security and Civil Protection.
