Mali football coach tom saintfiet steps down amid crisis

Tom Saintfiet is no longer the head coach of Mali’s national football team. The Belgian tactician, who took charge in August 2024, announced his immediate departure in a social media post on April 27, 2026, amid escalating political and security turmoil in the country. Jihadist offensives and Tuareg rebel clashes have intensified instability across Mali.

“Today marks the end of my mission as head coach of Mali’s senior national team,” Saintfiet wrote on Facebook. “I leave with pride and dedication, despite difficult conditions. It is time for me to take on a new challenge.”

performance highlights under saintfiet’s leadership

In his 17 matches at the helm, Saintfiet guided Mali to a strong competitive record, suffering just two defeats. One of those losses came in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinals, where the team fell to Senegal (1-0). The victory over Mali prevented the Aigles from reaching the semifinals, but the overall performance under Saintfiet was widely regarded as solid given the circumstances.

“In these exceptionally challenging times for Mali, my deepest thoughts go to the Malian people and the nation as a whole,” Saintfiet added. “Football is a sport of unity, and I hope it continues to carry messages of peace and hope for Mali.”

He concluded with a message of solidarity: “May peace, stability, and hope return to Mali. Best of luck to the Aigles! Go Eagles!”

football federation responds to departure

The Malian Football Federation (FMF), led by president Mahazou dit Baba Cissé, formally acknowledged Saintfiet’s contributions and launched a public call for applicants to fill the vacant position. Saintfiet had previously been linked to the Ghana national team before Carlos Queiroz was appointed as head coach of the Black Stars.
