The Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) disciplinary committee met Wednesday evening to validate the 2-0 result from last Saturday’s Ligue 2 match at Bastia’s Armand-Cesari stadium. With just seconds remaining, referee Ruddy Buquet halted play to protect players from fireworks and flares launched from the stands, forcing an early end to the chaotic encounter.
Though the game never resumed, the disciplinary board confirmed the scoreline, which delivers promotion to Le Mans and relegates Bastia to the third tier—the newly formed Ligue 3, slated to replace the current National division next season.
Bastia avoids point deduction despite sanctions
The Corsican side received a harsh penalty: two enforced home matches behind closed doors plus one with a suspended closure. However, it escaped the threatened deduction of a league point—a relief given its recent disciplinary record. Just six months ago, Bastia faced a similar crisis when a flare thrown from the stands forced the abandonment of their December match against Red Star.
Speaking on the decision, LFP disciplinary board president Sébastien Deneux explained: «Typically, a point deduction is applied only when a match participant is directly impacted. In this case, no player or official was hit by the projectiles, so revoking the suspended sanction was not warranted.»
