Ivory Coast tackles plastic waste with SOLIBRA’s ECO BOX initiative

In a bold move to combat plastic pollution, SOLIBRA has unveiled its ECO BOX project, a groundbreaking initiative designed to foster sustainable circular economy practices in Treichville, Ivory Coast, on World Plastic Bag Free Day. This ambitious program was launched to address the pressing issue of plastic waste clogging drainage systems and undermining sanitation infrastructure in one of Abidjan’s most waste-intensive areas.

The ECO BOX initiative hinges on a strategic partnership between SOLIBRA, the J’Adore Foundation of Treichville, and BIRWAST, a leading plastic waste recycling enterprise. Together, these stakeholders aim to revolutionize waste management in the commune by transforming discarded plastics into valuable resources through structured collection and recycling systems.

To kickstart operations, SOLIBRA has equipped local teams with essential tools, including six wheelbarrows, a motorized collection tricycle, 80 garbage bags, twelve rakes, alongside gloves, shovels, and brooms. These resources are intended to streamline waste collection and ensure efficient processing of plastic debris before it can disrupt urban ecosystems.

The project outlines a multi-faceted approach to tackle plastic waste challenges in Treichville. Key objectives include gradually eliminating plastic blockages in drainage channels to mitigate flood risks, creating job opportunities for local youth as waste collectors and drivers, and promoting the economic valorization of collected plastics through recycling. Equally critical is the project’s focus on public awareness, with collection agents tasked with educating residents on proper waste sorting and fostering a culture of cleanliness within the community.

The official launch of ECO BOX was commemorated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, symbolizing the project’s commencement. A highlight of the event was the handover of the first collection tricycle to a local agent, who will now traverse Treichville’s streets to gather plastic waste, marking a tangible step toward a cleaner, more sustainable urban environment.
