Intense clashes in Mali’s anéfis as military seeks control

Recent clashes in Anéfis, a critical town in northern Mali, have escalated into some of the deadliest confrontations in the ongoing struggle for regional dominance. The fighting has left a significant toll on both sides, with the Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) suffering heavy losses while asserting their commitment to reclaiming key territories.

Anéfis: A pivotal battleground in Mali’s security crisis

The strategic importance of Anéfis cannot be overstated. Located about 100 kilometers south of Kidal, this town serves as a critical junction for supply routes used by armed groups operating in the region. The Malian military, supported by allied forces, has prioritized securing Anéfis to disrupt these logistical networks and strengthen their position against rebel factions.

A divided battlefield: Heavy casualties on both sides

The Malian military has confirmed the loss of nearly thirty soldiers, referred to as “martyrs,” along with over sixty wounded, some in critical condition. Meanwhile, the military claims to have inflicted substantial damage on the opposing coalition, which includes separatist groups like the National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad and Al-Qaeda-affiliated terrorists under the Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin banner. The rebels, in turn, acknowledged casualties but did not provide specific numbers, describing their losses as “some of their finest fighters.”

Reports from military sources indicate that the battle was fiercely contested. A contingent of Malian troops, reinforced by Russian allies, initially found themselves isolated in a military camp, fending off relentless attacks. The tide turned with the arrival of a heavily armed convoy from Gao, bolstered by aerial support, which enabled the military to regain control of the area. Rebel factions, however, have framed their withdrawal as a “strategic retreat” to minimize civilian harm.
