Gabon unveils marine spatial plan through nationwide consultations

The Gabonese government has launched a series of public consultations to present the draft National Marine Spatial Plan, a cornerstone initiative for sustainable ocean governance. Teams from the Ministry of the Blue Economy are currently touring coastal and inland provinces to outline the nation’s strategic vision for marine resource management.

In Port-Gentil, a key hub for artisanal fishing, stakeholders gathered to discuss the proposed zoning of local marine areas. The initiative aligns with the “Blue Obligations” project, positioning Gabon as a global leader in innovative conservation financing for marine ecosystems.

The consultations aim to establish a consensus on the boundaries of protected marine zones. Once finalized, the zoning plan will be submitted to national authorities for official endorsement.

The initiative reflects Gabon’s dual commitment to ecological preservation and socio-economic development. By safeguarding critical habitats—such as mangroves—while ensuring equitable access to marine resources for artisanal fishermen, fishmongers, and seafood processors, the plan seeks to balance the needs of present and future generations.

Ministry experts are tasked with identifying traditional fishing grounds, migratory corridors, and climate-resilient zones in the Estuary, Nyanga, and Ogooué-Maritime provinces by July 19.
