French navy intercepts sanctioned Cameroonian-flagged oil tanker in Mediterranean

The French Navy has intercepted the oil tanker Deliver, flying an illegally obtained Cameroonian flag, after authorities in Yaoundé imposed sanctions on the vessel.

Operation follows recent seizures of similar vessels

This interception comes after the Tagor and Smyrtos were seized in early June in the English Channel for flying false Cameroonian flags. Authorities confirmed that document examination raised serious doubts about the legitimacy of the vessel’s registration.

Yaoundé’s sanctions target illegal flagging practices

The Cameroonian government has sanctioned the Deliver as part of a broader crackdown on vessels using its flag illegally. Since the incidents involving Tagor and Smyrtos, authorities have removed 39 ships from the Cameroonian registry to tighten oversight and protect the country’s maritime credentials.

French President Emmanuel Macron stated that the Deliver is believed to be part of Russia’s shadow fleet, a network of vessels used to evade international sanctions on Moscow.

“The French Navy intercepted the Deliver on Tuesday as it transited off the coast of Sicily, violating maritime law. This action, following a similar operation by the United Kingdom, underscores Europe’s commitment to halting the shadow fleet and preventing it from funding Russia’s war effort,” Macron emphasized.

Stricter measures to protect Cameroon’s maritime identity

Yaoundé has defended its sanctions, stating they are essential for physically auditing and digitalizing its fleet registry. The government aims to enhance transparency and safeguard Cameroon’s maritime identity against illegal practices.

Ongoing efforts to curb sanctions evasion

The interception of the Deliver highlights Europe’s intensified efforts to disrupt the shadow fleet, which has been instrumental in circumventing Western sanctions on Russian oil and gas exports. The operation reflects a coordinated strategy among European nations to enforce maritime regulations and prevent illicit trade.
