Rising fraud prompts France to tighten student visa rules for Cameroonians

In response to mounting concerns, the French embassy in Cameroon has defended its decision to impose stricter financial requirements on Cameroonian students seeking visas for private French institutions. Diplomatic officials cite a surge in document fraud as the primary justification for these heightened measures.

On July 16, during a press briefing in Yaoundé, embassy representatives highlighted that irregularities have become particularly prevalent in applications processed through Campus France. Muriel Piquet-Viaux, Advisor for Cooperation and Cultural Action, emphasized that falsified documents—including bank statements, identity papers, and financial certificates—have become alarmingly common.

To combat this trend, consular authorities have implemented stricter verification protocols. All submitted documents are now subjected to rigorous scrutiny by a specialized team. Additionally, students admitted to private French institutions must either provide proof of full tuition payment or demonstrate sufficient financial resources before their visa is approved. For those who have already paid a deposit, the embassy has clarified that refund processes will be handled in coordination with the respective institutions, with funds released only after visa issuance.

New rules spark widespread concern

Cameroon currently stands as the sole African nation affected by these tightened visa regulations. The policy shift has triggered significant anxiety and criticism among families, many of whom view the measures as an unnecessary barrier to educational opportunities abroad.
