DRC Ebola Outbreak: Over 500 Dead as Virus Spreads Across Eastern Congo

Latest Developments in the DRC Ebola Crisis

The ongoing Ebola epidemic in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has claimed over 500 lives, according to the latest data from the Congolese Ministry of Health.

  • As of today, there have been 1,561 confirmed cases, including 506 deaths, with 253 people declared cured and 628 patients currently receiving treatment in isolation or hospitalization.
  • The outbreak, declared on May 15, has spread to 36 health zones across the provinces of Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu, where community transmission of the virus continues unabated.

Ituri Province remains the hardest-hit region, accounting for over 91% of all confirmed cases and nearly 84% of all deaths since the start of the outbreak, according to Congolese authorities.

Rapidly Evolving Virus

The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus continues to evolve rapidly and is spreading rapidly across the region.

As of July 1, over 10,800 people who have come into contact with confirmed cases are being monitored in Ituri and North Kivu as part of efforts to contain the spread of the disease.
