The head of France’s professional football disciplinary body has justified the decision to uphold the 0-0 draw between FC Nantes and Toulouse FC, abandoned on May 17 after home supporters stormed the pitch. The ruling has drawn criticism from Toulouse officials, who had pushed for a 3-0 forfeit victory.

The incident unfolded during the final round of Ligue 1 fixtures when Nantes supporters invaded the field in the 22nd minute, prompting referee Clément Turpin to halt the match. Toulouse FC immediately condemned the decision to validate the scoreline as it stood, describing the outcome as “a missed opportunity to sanction the behavior that derailed a competitive fixture”.

In an official statement, the club expressed “regret that the match could not conclude under normal circumstances” and questioned what concrete measures Toulouse could have implemented to allow play to resume. The statement added that the club would remain vigilant about the potential for future misconduct triggered by such decisions.

« It is unthinkable that clubs or their supporters should attempt to influence a match’s outcome through deliberate interference. »

Sébastien Deneux, president of the Ligue de Football Professionnel’s disciplinary commission, addressed the controversy head-on.

He emphasized that the decision to confirm the 0-0 result hinged on two critical factors: first, the recent introduction of this option into the regulations two years ago, replacing the previous binary choices of match loss or replay at 0-0; second, and most crucially, the absence of any sporting stakes at the moment the game was abandoned.

« Nantes were already relegated, and Toulouse’s final position—whether they finished 9th with 45 or 47 points—would have remained unchanged had they won or drawn, » Deneux explained. « From a purely sporting perspective, validating the score or declaring Nantes the loser produced identical outcomes. »

Why validate the draw instead of awarding Toulouse a loss? The disciplinary commission’s revised regulations were designed to separate sporting outcomes from disciplinary sanctions, preventing teams from capitalizing on opponents’ misconduct to gain an unfair advantage.

« It would have been illogical to award Toulouse a 3-0 victory on paper given that the match was abandoned with the score at 0-0, » Deneux reasoned. « The new rules aim to prevent any club from benefiting from another’s supporters’ disruptive actions. »

Could this ruling set a dangerous precedent?

Deneux dismissed such concerns outright. « This decision must be understood within the unique context of zero sporting impact. In any other scenario, the outcome would likely have differed. » He reiterated the commission’s unwavering stance: « Clubs and their supporters must never believe they can manipulate a match’s result through deliberate abandonment. We will remain vigilant to ensure this principle is never compromised. »
