Cameroon tightens gold sector oversight to curb fraud

The Cameroonian government has launched a comprehensive crackdown on fraudulent practices in the gold mining sector, aiming to significantly boost state revenues.

Starting August 1st, intensified monitoring will target unauthorized mining operations nationwide. By 2026, authorities expect to recover approximately $680 million in tax and customs revenue from an estimated 17.17 tonnes of gold production slated for 2025-2026.

This initiative responds to long-standing concerns over underreported gold output. Current data suggests that actual production volumes often exceed declared figures, depriving public coffers of critical funds. The government has identified at least 200 companies operating without proper authorization, exacerbating the problem.

Through rigorous field inspections and stricter compliance measures, officials aim to bring transparency to the sector. The move reflects a broader commitment to strengthening governance in Cameroon’s extractive industries while maximizing fiscal contributions from natural resources.
