According to a CAF press release, the football executive will first visit Gorée Island before meeting Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. He will hold a press conference this Wednesday at 5:30 PM to address several sensitive issues affecting African football, including the disputed awarding of the CAN 2025 trophy to Morocco.
A visit aimed at easing tensions
The CAF president announced in late March that he would travel to Senegal and Morocco to emphasize the importance of «working together to develop African football», as his organization faces mounting criticism following the controversial decision by the CAF Appeals Committee to strip Senegal of its African Cup title in favor of Morocco. The Senegalese Football Federation has since appealed the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), which is expected to rule on the matter in the coming months.
A tense political and sporting context
Motsepe’s visit to Senegal comes at a particularly tense moment. On March 18, the Senegalese government called for an international investigation into «allegations of corruption within the governing bodies» of the African football governing body. In response, Motsepe reaffirmed that no African country is treated preferentially, praising the independence of the disciplinary bodies.
