Bénin: Talon’s farewell speech as Wadagni prepares to take office

As Romuald Wadagni prepares to take the oath of office on Sunday, May 24, 2026, outgoing President Patrice Talon delivered a heartfelt address to the Nation. After two full constitutional terms and a decade marked by challenges—including a thwarted coup attempt—the head of state reflected on his leadership and urged continuity in public service.

In his farewell message to the Béninois people, President Talon not only commemorated his tenure but also welcomed a new chapter under his successor. He began by congratulating President-elect Romuald Wadagni, who will soon assume the highest office in the country.

« This Sunday, the elected President, Mr. Romuald Wadagni, will formally swear in and take charge. From that moment, he will shoulder the vital mission of steering our nation toward greater collective and individual progress and well-being, » Talon affirmed.

He extended his best wishes to Wadagni, emphasizing the importance of the task ahead. « I wish to reaffirm my deepest wishes for his success in the seven years ahead, » he added.

Looking back on his decade in power, President Talon painted an optimistic picture of his administration’s achievements. With visible emotion, he stated: « As I step down, I want to thank you all from the bottom of my heart. I am deeply proud of the demanding path we have courageously walked together over the past ten years—of the challenges overcome, the reforms implemented, and the major projects launched to strengthen our state and align public action with socioeconomic development. »

While acknowledging the hardships faced, he noted: « The journey was not always easy; obstacles often stood in our way. Yet, these very challenges made the experience rewarding and strengthened our resolve. »

He emphasized that perseverance had yielded tangible results: « Today, as the world observes with admiration, we can see the progress we have made. Our efforts and sacrifices are gradually bearing fruit. »

Talon credited the nation’s collective effort, highlighting the contributions of all Béninois—urban and rural dwellers, the diaspora, youth, and elders alike. « This success belongs to every one of us, » he declared.

In a more personal reflection, he expressed his gratitude: « Serving as the captain of this remarkable journey was the honor of a lifetime. My gratitude to Bénin and to each of you knows no bounds. »

With his mandate officially ending, President Talon expressed unwavering confidence in the future. « As I hand over to President Romuald Wadagni, I am convinced that under his leadership, our nation will achieve even greater milestones on its path to greatness.
