Benin swears in Romuald Wadagni as new president

The inauguration ceremony began with the Constitutional Court’s official announcement of the presidential election results, delivered from a solemnly seated bench. Moments later, the long-awaited oath-taking moment arrived: Romuald Wadagni stepped forward, dressed in a dark suit and blue tie, his right hand raised high as he swore to uphold and defend the Constitution and accept the consequences of perjury.

The ceremony was punctuated by the resonant boom of twelve ceremonial cannons. Following the oath, he was officially proclaimed Grand Master of national orders, and the Chief of Staff presented him with the national flag.

In his address, the new President pledged to serve Benin with unwavering integrity, courage, and dedication, ensuring the rule of law and protecting fundamental freedoms. He promised citizens inclusive growth, one that would uplift every household. On national security, he reaffirmed Benin’s firm stance against any threats to its stability.

Strengthening regional bonds and international alliances

Held on the esplanade of the Palais des Congrès, the event drew prominent figures, including former Bénin Presidents Nicéphore Soglo and Thomas Boni Yayi, alongside 16 foreign delegations. Among them was the French Minister Delegate for International Partnerships, as well as Benin’s immediate neighbors—Togo, Nigeria, Burkina Faso, and Niger—despite ongoing diplomatic tensions with the latter.

Addressing the assembled regional leaders, Wadagni emphasized the necessity of deepened cooperation. “We have no choice but to work together,” he declared, signaling his commitment to regional solidarity.
