Benin strengthens emergency healthcare with 600 new oxygen concentrators
The Beninese healthcare landscape is undergoing a significant transformation. Professor Benjamin Hounkpatin, the Minister of Health, officially accepted a shipment of 600 high-tech oxygen concentrators on April 16, 2026. This initiative aims to bolster the operational capacity of 23 medical facilities spread across the nation.
Advanced medical technology to protect lives
Procured through UNICEF with financial backing from the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China, this equipment represents a total investment exceeding 205,450 US dollars (approximately 116 million FCFA). These “10LPM single flow” units are designed to provide a continuous, reliable supply of oxygen, which is essential for treating patients suffering from acute respiratory distress.
The distribution of these devices will focus on hospitals and health centers in several key regions, including Alibori, Littoral, Atacora, Borgou, Donga, Couffo, and Atlantique.
A strategic move to lower maternal and child mortality
According to Minister Benjamin Hounkpatin, this delivery is a vital component of a broader strategy to decrease maternal, neonatal, and infant mortality rates. He emphasized that the availability of oxygen is a critical factor in emergency care.
“Ensuring access to oxygen is a matter of life and death,” the Minister noted during the ceremony. “These tools demonstrate our firm resolve to provide every citizen with high-quality, equitable medical services, regardless of their location.”
Strengthening international health cooperation
The handover ceremony featured notable figures, including His Excellency Wei Zhang, the Chinese Ambassador, and Ousmane Niang, the Resident Representative of UNICEF. Ambassador Zhang highlighted the strong diplomatic ties between China and Benin, reaffirming Beijing’s commitment to supporting the local health sector.
The UNICEF representative further explained that these resources, funded by individual donors in China, will significantly enhance the resilience of Benin’s health infrastructure when facing life-threatening emergencies. This upgrade to the national technical platform reflects the government’s ongoing dedication to modernizing public health services for better performance.
