In a truly last-gasp effort, Belgium dramatically secured their place in the World Cup Round of 16 on Wednesday, July 1st, overcoming Senegal with a decisive penalty converted deep into extra time, clinching a thrilling 3-2 victory.

Despite Senegal holding a comfortable two-goal lead until the 85th minute, thanks to strikes from Habib Diarra (24th minute) and Ismaïla Sarr (51st minute), the Belgian squad mounted an incredible late-game surge. Successive goals from Romelu Lukaku (86th minute) and Youri Tielemans (89th minute) allowed the Red Devils to force the match into extra time.

The encounter had been anticipated as an unpredictable clash between two teams that had shown inconsistent form, each having recorded one draw and one win in their previous matches.

The Senegalese side initiated the game with fierce attacks, relentlessly testing the Belgian defense. Thibaut Courtois, the towering goalkeeper for the Red Devils and Real Madrid, could only get a touch on a cross from Ismail Jakobs, set up by Sadio Mané, before Ismaïla Sarr’s subsequent shot rattled the post (13th minute). However, Habib Diarra ultimately broke the deadlock in the 24th minute. Following another dangerous cross from Mané, who was a constant threat on the left flank, Sarr’s header again struck the post, but the 22-year-old Diarra was the quickest to react, slotting the rebound home.

Belgium’s unexpected resurgence

At halftime, Belgian coach Rudi Garcia, a Frenchman, implemented significant tactical adjustments, withdrawing Charles De Ketelaere, Kevin De Bruyne, and Jérémy Doku, and introducing Romelu Lukaku. These changes did not immediately yield results, as Senegal extended their lead with another goal from Ismaïla Sarr.

The second-half refreshment break proved aptly named, as tensions visibly flared between Belgian captain Youri Tielemans and teammate Leandro Trossard. Yet, this moment of friction seemed to ignite a powerful collective response. An ambitious long-range strike from Ismail Jakobs narrowly missed Diaw’s top corner (77th minute), before Romelu Lukaku finally found the back of the net (86th minute). Belgium’s all-time leading World Cup scorer, now with 6 goals, reignited hope for his team. Just three minutes later, Tielemans headed in the equalizer (89th minute), bringing Belgium level.

The initial phases of extra time were largely uneventful, but the final minutes saw a dramatic surge of action. Dodi Lukébakio’s shot was deflected onto the crossbar (117th minute). However, a penalty awarded after a video assistant referee (VAR) review for an irregular tackle provided captain Tielemans with the opportunity to deliver Belgium the victory, converting the crucial spot-kick.

“In football, anything is always possible as long as you believe. The strength of this group also lies with those who come off the bench because you cannot achieve results with just eleven players,” remarked Rudi Garcia following the match.

Belgium, who reached the semi-finals in 2018 but suffered a group stage exit four years ago, is now set to compete in the Round of 16 on July 7th, where they will face either the United States or Bosnia-Herzegovina.

For the Senegalese players, their fourth appearance at the World Cup concludes with considerable disappointment, perhaps mirroring the regret of losing the last Africa Cup of Nations to Morocco via a technicality. Coach Pape Thiaw expressed his team’s sentiments: “We are eliminated, and it hurts. We must commend the team for giving their absolute best, but unfortunately, we couldn’t hold onto our lead.”
