The dramatic 0-3 forfeiture against Morocco in the AFCON 2025 final has not only stripped the West African powerhouse of its championship but also plunged African football into an unprecedented crisis of trust. Clubs, pundits, and global media outlets have universally condemned the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for its controversial decision.

Recent reports underscore the escalating backlash against the CAF’s ruling. According to AS, Egyptian club Pharco FC has declared an indefinite boycott of all CAF-organized tournaments, citing their strong protest against the handling of this matter. The club views the decision against Senegal as «unjust, politically motivated, and contrary to the spirit of sportsmanship».

Beyond Pharco FC, a multitude of other Egyptian and Algerian clubs have voiced solidarity with Senegal, hinting at potential future boycotts of continental competitions. Prominent teams such as Mamelodi Sundowns (South Africa) and Simba SC (Tanzania) have labeled the decision «disgraceful», warning of a perilous precedent for the future of African football.

The controversy stems from the CAF’s prior judgment that Senegal forfeited their AFCON 2025 final match against Morocco with a 0-3 scoreline. The official verdict found Senegal in breach of regulations for abandoning the field in protest of a penalty awarded to Morocco towards the end of regular time.

The peculiar aspect that fueled the dispute was the match’s resumption following a 10-minute stoppage. Senegal returned to play, maintaining their 1-0 lead after extra time courtesy of a Pape Gueye goal, and even celebrated by lifting the championship trophy in Rabat on January 18.

However, subsequent to a formal complaint lodged by Morocco, the CAF unexpectedly overturned the initial outcome, declaring Morocco the 3-0 victor and awarding the host nation the championship title.

This ruling instantly sent shockwaves throughout the global football community. L’Équipe branded it as one of the most «bizarre and contentious» decisions in contemporary football history, while The Athletic highlighted that such a precedent was unheard of in a continental championship context.

A multitude of experts have also challenged the justification behind this contentious decision. They argue that had Senegal indeed committed a serious infraction, the referee and match organizers should have either halted the game or declared a default immediately, rather than waiting until after the final whistle to alter the result following Morocco’s appeal.

The Senegalese Football Federation subsequently affirmed its commitment to appeal the decision to both the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and FIFA. African media outlets have even suggested that the Senegalese national team is contemplating withdrawal from all CAF competitions, citing what they perceive as profoundly unfair treatment.

This entire episode severely damages the reputation of African football, especially given that the AFCON stands as the continent’s most esteemed national team competition. Many fear that if this crisis persists, the prestige and competitive integrity of CAF-organized tournaments could be significantly jeopardized in the coming years.
