What the UN’s 10.5 billion FCFA means for everyday life in Gabon in 2025
For the first time since taking office in January, the United Nations resident coordinator in Gabon, Fatou Aminata Lo, met with journalists at the UN common house yesterday. The meeting went beyond a simple review of the 2025 activity report; it aimed to strengthen the strategic partnership and involve the media in the push towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the upcoming 2028-2032 framework.
Flanked by agency heads, she explained the deeper meaning of the UN’s engagement: “Our contribution is not measured only by the number of projects delivered, but also by our ability to bring actors together and to help turn public policies into concrete results for the population.”
In 2025, a total envelope of 10.5 billion CFA francs (18.5 million dollars) was mobilized through 21 entities and nearly 300 staff members, 70% of whom are nationals. The spending focused on three priorities: promoting good governance and human rights, transitioning to a green and blue economy, and ensuring equal opportunities and social inclusion.
During the exchange, journalists raised concrete concerns. They asked about the real role of the UN system and sought clarity on how these programs directly affect people facing urgent socio-economic challenges.
It was a frank discussion that laid the groundwork for closer, more transparent collaboration.
