Togo-Brazil ties set to deepen under new diplomatic talks in Lomé

The President of the Council, Faure Gnassingbé, welcomed Brazil’s Ambassador to Togo, Luiz Ivaldo Villafañe Gomes Santos, for a high-level meeting in Lomé on Thursday, July 30, 2026. This gathering underscores the ongoing commitment of both nations to nurture a robust bilateral relationship built on mutual dialogue and shared cooperation.

During the discussions, the Brazilian envoy outlined the current state of Togolese-Brazilian relations and highlighted potential avenues for collaboration across key sectors. He reiterated Brazil’s readiness to expand this partnership for the collective benefit of both populations.

« We reflected on the long-standing ties between our countries, the bonds of friendship and cooperation that unite us, and our shared determination to further strengthen this relationship for mutual progress, » Ambassador Luiz Ivaldo Villafañe Gomes Santos remarked following the meeting.

The talks also explored strategies to bolster Brazil’s engagement with African nations through a more dynamic South-South cooperation framework. Emphasis was placed on experience-sharing, solidarity, and aligning mutual interests to drive sustainable development across the continent.

Diplomatic ties spanning over five decades

Diplomatic relations between Togo and Brazil, established in 1972, have evolved into a multifaceted partnership. Today, collaboration spans critical areas such as agriculture, security, vocational and technological training, and diplomatic initiatives. A significant milestone was achieved in November 2018 with the signing of a reciprocal visa waiver agreement for holders of diplomatic and service passports in Lomé.
