Suspect arrested in Mpumalanga for assaulting grandmother over pension

Mbombela, South Africa – Police authorities in Mpumalanga province have arrested a man suspected of brutally assaulting his grandmother in the Nkomazi municipality. The arrest on June 7, 2026, came after a video of the entire incident circulated widely on social media.

The assault took place at a tavern in eMagogeni. The footage shows the suspect punching and kicking the victim repeatedly, then striking her with a beer crate. A bystander can be heard laughing during the attack as the elderly woman lay on the ground, severely injured and unable to defend herself.

Dispute over pension money led to assault in Mpumalanga

According to preliminary investigations, the incident stemmed from a financial disagreement. The elderly woman had noticed her pension money was missing—funds meant for food and electricity bills. She went to the tavern to confront her grandson, who then attacked her.

The video’s rapid spread online, combined with local police efforts, enabled authorities to quickly identify and locate the suspect. He is now in pretrial detention and will appear before a provincial court soon to face charges of assault and aggravated assault.
