Niamey, the capital of Niger, became the stage for critical diplomatic discussions on July 8 as foreign ministers from the Sahel Alliance (AES) met with their Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov. This second round of consultations marked a pivotal moment in deepening cooperation between the AES bloc and Moscow.
The Nigerien delegation, led by Foreign Minister Bakary Yaou Sangaré, joined counterparts from Mali and Burkina Faso—Abdoulaye Diop and Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré respectively. Together, they finalized a shared agenda aimed at strengthening mutual objectives across multiple fronts.
Malian Foreign Minister Diop highlighted the “fruitful and consistent dialogue” between the AES and Russia, noting tangible progress not only in defense partnerships but also in economic and commercial initiatives, all underpinned by aligned diplomatic priorities.
On regional security, the AES ministers emphasized the “urgent need” to escalate joint military efforts to bolster the operational readiness of the unified AES force. They also underscored the importance of economic collaboration as outlined in the “Second-Year Roadmap of the Sahel Confederation”, a strategic framework guiding regional development.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov reaffirmed Moscow’s commitment to a “mutually advantageous partnership” with the Sahel Alliance. He reiterated Russia’s support for both regional security initiatives and sustainable development projects aimed at improving living standards for affected populations.
This session follows the inaugural AES-Russia consultations held in Moscow in April 2025, part of a broader African diplomatic tour by Lavrov.
