Strengthening alliances: Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso solidify partnerships with Russia
Niamey, Niger’s bustling capital, played host this past Wednesday, July 8, to the second session of high-level consultations between foreign ministers of the Sahel States Alliance (AES) and Russia’s top diplomat, Sergey Lavrov.
The gathering brought together key figures from Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso—Bakary Yaou Sangaré, Abdoulaye Diop, and Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré respectively—to deliberate on fresh avenues for collaboration. The discussions culminated in a series of agreements that broaden the scope of cooperation across multiple sectors.
Speaking on behalf of the AES delegation, Abdoulaye Diop of Mali emphasized the fruitful and ongoing exchanges between the alliance and Moscow, which have already yielded tangible outcomes in both military cooperation and economic development. These efforts are underpinned by a shared diplomatic vision aimed at fostering sustainable progress in the region.
The ministers underscored the pressing need to enhance military collaboration to bolster the operational readiness of the AES’s unified force in the fight against regional terrorism. Additionally, they called for deeper economic integration, aligning with the objectives outlined in the alliance’s Second-Year Roadmap.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov reaffirmed his country’s commitment to a mutually advantageous partnership with the AES, reiterating Moscow’s unwavering support for both security initiatives and sustainable development projects. His remarks highlighted Russia’s dedication to improving the livelihoods of communities across the Sahel.
This latest round of consultations follows an initial meeting held in Moscow in April 2025, marking another step in Lavrov’s ongoing diplomatic engagements across Africa.
