Ousmane Sonko addressed growing speculations about a potential delay in the local elections, dismissing them outright. “We cannot forget the three lives lost to prevent the postponement of the presidential election,” he stated, underscoring the gravity of maintaining electoral timelines. Unlike the 2024 legislative elections—which were triggered by the dissolution of the National Assembly before the end of its term—these local elections are part of the regular electoral calendar. “There is no justification for altering their schedule,” he asserted.

Sonko, who also serves as the President of the National Assembly, stressed that the elections cannot be postponed as they are legally mandated. “The people must demand that these elections take place in January 2027,” he urged. He pointed out that electoral list revisions should already be underway, yet no progress has been made. “We fought, and some paid the ultimate price, to prevent election delays. We will not tolerate any attempts to push them back now.”
