Senegal’s world cup preparations under threat as koulibaly’s injury persists
A significant thigh injury has sidelined Senegal’s influential defender and captain, Kalidou Koulibaly (Al-Hilal), for several weeks, raising considerable apprehension just shy of two months before the highly anticipated World Cup.
In Senegal, this prolonged absence is sparking growing concern. The central defender and skipper of the national team, Kalidou Koulibaly, aged 34 with 102 caps and 2 goals, has not featured for his Saudi Pro League club, Al-Hilal, since April 8th.
Suffering from a thigh injury sustained during a training session, the former Napoli star’s return date to the pitch remains uncertain. With the World Cup merely six weeks away, the Lions of Teranga are scheduled to compete against France, Norway, and Iraq in Group I, making his fitness a critical factor.
al-hilal remains non-committal on koulibaly’s return
During his most recent press briefing, Al-Hilal’s coach, Simone Inzaghi, adopted a cautious stance regarding injury updates. « We currently have two players on the injury list, Malcom and Koulibaly. Malcom has returned and is naturally prepared, while Koulibaly is dealing with a thigh contusion that has led to a hematoma. We are monitoring his condition daily, and his comeback will be determined by his response to treatment over the forthcoming days, » the Italian tactician stated, offering limited specifics.
The Saudi club further elaborated, stating, « Kalidou Koulibaly has been diligently following his rehabilitation program at the Meena clinic, located at the club’s headquarters. This follows medical examinations conducted in Spain, which indicated the necessity for additional treatment sessions focusing on his anterior thigh muscle injury. » With only six league matches remaining for Al-Hilal, significant ambiguity still surrounds this crucial case. Having already missed the Africa Cup of Nations final and the March friendly encounters against Peru (2-0) and Gambia (3-1), the question looms: will Kalidou Koulibaly play again before the World Cup tournament commences?
