Sénégal: pastéf launches party leadership election amid sonko-diomaye tensions
The High Regulatory Authority of PASTEF-Les Patriotes (HARP) officially commenced the process for electing the party president on May 14, 2026. As outlined in its published Decision No. 001/2026/HARP, the window for submitting candidacies began on May 15 and will close precisely at noon on May 20, 2026.
Addressing President Faye’s call for party reform?
This recent decision does not grant any special privilege to the incumbent leader, Ousmane Sonko. Instead, it formally opens the leadership contest to all factions within the party. While the current Prime Minister retains the option to seek another term, the process explicitly avoids guaranteeing him an automatic path to the organization’s top position.
The establishment of this competitive framework directly reflects the public statements made by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, who had previously criticized the party for being overly «personified.» By implementing an open and regulated procedure, HARP directly addresses this concern, simultaneously bringing the crucial issue of PASTEF’s future leadership into sharp focus during a pivotal moment.
When recently questioned about the party’s potential candidate for the 2029 presidential election, Diomaye Faye indicated that any selection would hinge on the outcomes of the upcoming congress, underscoring that the internal debate over a nominee remained unresolved. This internal party leadership election thus serves as an essential precursor to that broader discussion.
A tight five-day window for submissions
HARP has established a rigorous timeline: prospective candidates are granted a mere five working days to compile and submit their applications. These submissions must adhere to a standard declaration form, a template of which is appended to the decision. The formal deliberation by HARP to initiate this process took place during a special session on May 14, 2026.
The outcome of this pivotal internal ballot will determine who officially represents PASTEF leading up to the next party congress, where the critical decision regarding the party’s candidate for the 2029 presidential contest is expected to be finalized.
