In a dramatic escalation of Senegal’s political tensions, Ousmane Sonko, leader of the PASTEF party, has accused opposition lawmakers of orchestrating a targeted conspiracy to block his reinstatement as a member of the National Assembly. Speaking to journalists, Sonko framed the move as a deliberate attempt by his adversaries to derail his political ambitions through questionable legal tactics.

« Their actions are nothing short of political scheming, » Sonko declared. « The constitutional challenge they’ve initiated is a calculated move to disrupt my mandate. They are fully aware this matter falls outside the Council’s jurisdiction. » The PASTEF leader also condemned what he described as the cynical use of state institutions to serve partisan interests, warning opponents against weaponizing governance structures for personal or political gain.

At the center of this dispute lies a constitutional clash over Sonko’s parliamentary eligibility. A group of legislators recently filed a petition with the Constitutional Council, arguing that his reinstatement on May 24—following his election as a deputy in 2024—violates Article 54 of the Constitution. They contend that Sonko’s prior appointment as Prime Minister created an inherent conflict of interest, rendering his parliamentary seat invalid from the outset.

In response, Sonko struck a defiant tone, vowing to counter what he perceives as an abuse of state power. « If they choose to wield state authority as a weapon, we will defend our rights using every constitutional tool at our disposal, » he asserted. The standoff underscores growing friction between Senegal’s ruling bloc and opposition forces, with the legal arena becoming the latest battleground in a high-stakes political rivalry.
