Patrice Talon elected president of Bénin’s new senate

In a landmark vote held on August 6, members of Bénin’s inaugural Senate elected former President Patrice Talon as its new president. The historic session took place at the Governors’ Palace in Porto-Novo, the nation’s capital, marking the official launch of the country’s newly established upper legislative chamber.

The senators also appointed the Senate’s executive bureau for a five-year term spanning 2026 to 2031. Among the key figures elected were Louis Vlavonou, who secured the position of vice president, Alassane Seidou, designated as rapporteur, and Adidjatou Mathys, named as deputy rapporteur. Patrice Talon, aged 68, received an overwhelming majority with 24 votes in favor, no dissenting ballots, and just one abstention, underscoring broad political consensus.

The Senate’s first session opened on July 30 in Porto-Novo, paving the way for the adoption of its internal rules and procedures. This bicameral shift follows a constitutional amendment enacted on December 17, 2025, which transformed Bénin’s Parliament from a single-chamber system into a two-tier legislature comprising the National Assembly and the Senate.

Among the Senate’s core responsibilities are safeguarding national unity, reinforcing state institutions, promoting political stability, upholding democracy, fostering peace, and ensuring adherence to the political truce.
