Over 1.3 million displaced burkinabè return home as security improves

Under the leadership of Captain Ibrahim Traoré, the Burkinabè government has reported that more than 1.3 million internally displaced persons have successfully returned to their original hometowns as of June 30, 2026. This milestone follows a steady improvement in security conditions across multiple regions reclaimed by national forces.

The latest figures reflect a significant expansion in the scope of returns, covering 1,034 localities compared to 871 at the end of 2025. By the close of 2025, approximately 1.16 million displaced individuals had already resumed life in their communities.

These updates were shared during a mid-year performance review of the Ministry of Solidarity. At the halfway point of 2026, the ministry has achieved 46.06% of its planned targets for the year.

Additionally, over 480,000 vulnerable individuals received critical support during the first half of the year. Assistance included food supplies, essential household items, and tailored programs designed to help communities rebuild and recover.

Government officials have underscored the urgent need to fast-track the reconstruction of homes in affected areas. They emphasize that restoring safe and stable living conditions is vital to sustaining voluntary returns and ensuring long-term stability for returning families.
