Just four days after his dismissal as Prime Minister, Ousmane Sonko has been elected President of Senegal’s National Assembly.

Ousmane Sonko was elected on Tuesday, 26 May 2026, as President of Senegal’s National Assembly, just days after his removal from the Prime Minister position by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye.

Leader of the African Patriots of Senegal for Work, Ethics and Fraternity (PASTEF)—the ruling party—Sonko secured 132 votes out of 133 cast, succeeding El Malick Ndiaye, who resigned last Sunday.

On Monday evening, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye appointed Ahmadou Al Aminou Lô as the new Prime Minister. Aminou Lô previously served as Minister in charge of monitoring, guiding, and evaluating the ‘Senegal 2050 National Transformation Program’ within the presidency, before holding the position of Secretary-General of the Senegalese government.
