Morocco honours Donald Trump with highway naming amid Sahara sovereignty recognition
Morocco’s King Mohammed VI has made a striking diplomatic gesture by naming a major national highway after former US President Donald Trump. The announcement came on August 1st, commemorating Trump’s historic 2020 recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Western Sahara—a decision Morocco’s leadership has described as a pivotal moment in bilateral relations.
Honouring a landmark decision
The newly designated Autoroute Donald Trump spans 1,055 kilometres, connecting Tiznit and Dakhla. This route now stands as Africa’s longest road infrastructure, symbolising both progress and partnership. In an official letter dated July 2nd, King Mohammed VI expressed his gratitude for Trump’s decisive stance, stating that the gesture would be etched in the nation’s memory forever.
The king noted, “In tribute to this powerful display of friendship and peace, I have decided to name one of the kingdom’s most vital roadways after Donald Trump.”
Diplomatic breakthrough and regional implications
In December 2020, Trump’s administration shifted US policy by endorsing a Moroccan autonomy plan for Western Sahara. This move, announced alongside Morocco’s agreement to normalize relations with Israel, marked a turning point in the decades-long dispute over the territory.
Historically a Spanish colony until 1975, Western Sahara is a phosphate-rich desert region with abundant fisheries. While Morocco controls most of the territory, the United Nations continues to classify it as a non-autonomous region awaiting a resolution. The Trump administration’s recognition of Moroccan sovereignty was widely seen as a major diplomatic victory for Rabat.
Continued support and mutual recognition
In a public message marking the 27th anniversary of King Mohammed VI’s accession to the throne, Trump reiterated his unwavering backing for Morocco’s autonomy initiative. The exchange underscores the enduring significance of the 2020 policy shift in shaping current relations between the two nations.
Symbolism and national pride
For Morocco, the highway’s renaming serves as more than a diplomatic gesture—it reflects deep national pride and appreciation for international allies. The Autoroute Donald Trump is not only a vital economic corridor but also a lasting tribute to a pivotal moment in the country’s foreign policy history.
