The French club, Olympique de Marseille (OM), initially considered selling Greenwood to balance their financial sheets, but the unexpected twist has left Italian football circles in a state of frustration.
The shift in Greenwood’s destination has particularly irked Italian football pundits, who had anticipated his arrival in Rome. AS Roma, under the leadership of Gian Piero Gasperini, had identified Greenwood as a key target to strengthen their squad. However, the deal collapsed, leaving fans and analysts questioning the reliability of such transfers.
Italian experts warn of transfer pitfalls
Renowned Italian football journalist Roberto Pruzzo expressed his dismay over the situation, stating, “Greenwood’s transfer is a classic case of how these negotiations often go wrong. There’s no clarity on whether the player genuinely wanted to join Roma, and in the end, he ends up at Fenerbahçe. It’s rare to see a club say, ‘This is the player we want,’ and then finalize the deal within hours.”
His colleague, Fernando Orsi, echoed the sentiment, adding, “Football won’t stop with Greenwood’s absence. He doesn’t strike me as a reliable figure, and with half the transfer fee, Roma could have found a better fit for Gasperini. The World Cup is a prime opportunity for players to showcase their talent.”
Roma’s plan B takes shape
Meanwhile, Paolo Marcacci emphasized Roma’s need to explore alternative options, suggesting, “Moreira is a top-tier player whose profile aligns perfectly with Gasperini’s philosophy. His stock has risen since the World Cup, but the club must also consider Nusa, Garnacho, and others. Tresoldi, too, has had an impressive season. Gasperini could refine Moreira into an even more complete player. Greenwood’s salary is beyond Italy’s reach, and Roma’s decision to pass on him means sacrificing a Champions League spot.”
