Malian troops regain control in clashes with armed groups

The Malian Armed Forces (FAMA) have declared a renewed initiative across combat zones, asserting full control over areas targeted by the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) in the north and the Support Group for Islam and Muslims (JNIM), an Al-Qaeda affiliate, in central and southern Mali.

Sustained military operations secure key regions

In a formal statement, the FAMA confirmed ongoing clashes in Anifif, northeastern Mali, situated roughly 110 kilometers south of Kidal, following the arrival of additional fighters and matériel for the FLA. The army emphasized the resilience of its units, stating: “In response to these pressures, Malian troops continued combat operations with unwavering determination, executing tactical maneuvers throughout the day with precision and discipline.”

The military communique underscored its “unshakable confidence in the capacity of the FAMA to safeguard national unity, territorial integrity, protect civilian populations, and decisively defeat hostile forces.” This reassurance follows intensified security challenges in recent weeks.

Counterclaims from the Azawad Liberation Front

In contrast, the Azawad Liberation Front’s spokesperson, Mohamed Mouloud Ramadan, asserted control over Anfif, claiming the resumption of hostilities favored their position. He also refuted reports of the death of the group’s leader, Mbarek Ag Akli, insisting the commander remains actively engaged in directing field operations in northern Mali.
