Ligue 1 setback: olympique lyonnais’s request for opening match postponement denied
Olympique Lyonnais will not receive special dispensation as they embark on their European journey. The club, not yet fully secured a spot in the Champions League, is required to navigate a third preliminary round in early August, with the potential for playoff matches following approximately two weeks later.
These crucial playoff fixtures are set to occur just days before the commencement of the Ligue 1 championship season, where Paulo Fonseca’s squad is scheduled to face Toulouse. Lyon’s management formally approached the LFP (Ligue de Football Professionnel), submitting a written request to reschedule their opening Ligue 1 fixture. The club argued that their request was made in “the superior interest of French football.”

However, the LFP delivered a negative response, declining to postpone any Ligue 1 matches right at the start of the new season. Consequently, Olympique Lyonnais will need to adapt to this decision should they advance to the Champions League playoff rounds.
