The disciplinary committee of France’s top football league has finalized sanctions against nice after pitch invasions during the final league 1 match against metz. The azzurri will host the playoff return leg against st-Étienne in an empty stadium.

the league’s disciplinary board has delivered its verdict. As anticipated, nice will play the second leg of the league 1-league 2 playoff at an empty stadium on may 29 at 8:45 pm. Following last sunday’s incidents during the final league 1 match against metz (0-0)—including a pitch invasion by nice ultras—the disciplinary committee has imposed a two-match stadium ban at the allianz riviera and a suspended one-match closure for the club. The first leg will take place at geoffroy-guichard on may 26.

Rivière: “when you support a team, you see it through to the end”

nice will also start the new season without fans in the stands, whether in league 1 or league 2. “i regret how things ended. as long as there’s hope, you have to support the team. we’re going through a very tough time—let’s face it. a season far tougher than expected,” reflected jean-pierre rivière, visibly shaken after the chaos.

“anger is understandable; everyone has lived through a difficult season. when you return, you know it’s going to be tough, and survival is the goal. so far, we’ve failed, but we still have two games left. when you back a team, you stand by them to the end,” added the newly reinstated president of ogcn nice mid-season. support will now have to be shown outside the nice stands on may 29, when the fate of the club hangs in the balance.
