Le Mans football club secures historic promotion to Ligue 1

Action in the 34th and final matchday of Ligue 2 was abruptly halted by the referee after fans invaded the pitch at Stade Armand-Cesari in Furiani, firing smoke flares in protest of the second goal scored by Le Mans in stoppage time.

Historic promotion for Le Mans FC

The club’s return to Ligue 1 marks a defining moment in its history, ending a 16-year absence from France’s top flight. Le Mans FC hailed the achievement as a “historic milestone filled with emotion and pride” in an official statement.

This promotion is a collective triumph for the entire club, declared president Thierry Gomez. “It presents a major challenge ahead, but we remain steadfast in our commitment.”

Bastia relegated to Ligue 3 with sanctions

The French Football League (LFP) imposed strict penalties on Bastia, including two suspended matches and a further game to be played behind closed doors at their home stadium. The decision followed an emergency review of the match-day disturbances.

Earlier, the LFP had already initiated disciplinary proceedings, citing the urgency of the situation. While the final score remained unconfirmed until midweek due to the pitch invasion, the outcome stood: Le Mans secured their place in Ligue 1, while Laval’s victory as a playoff qualifier sealed Bastia’s relegation to the third tier.

Celebrations despite the chaos

Undeterred by the incidents, Le Mans players celebrated their promotion immediately, first in the dressing rooms and later with fans outside their training center in the early hours of Sunday.

This achievement is even more remarkable considering Le Mans’ recent journey—from competing in the National league in the 2024-2025 season to now standing on the brink of Ligue 1.

It’s worth noting that Bastia had previously forfeited a match in December after a smoke flare struck an opposing player during an earlier encounter with Red Star.
