Jihadist video surfaces from inates attack, reigniting security fears in Niger’s Tillabéry region

Jihadist groups operating within the volatile “three borders” area have released a video, which they assert depicts the June 17, 2026 assault on the Inates military base in Niger’s western Tillabéry region.

The footage, coupled with accompanying statements from the assailants, suggests the attack commenced with a barrage of mortar fire directed at the military installations. The militants claim they subsequently encircled the base before initiating a ground offensive utilizing automatic weapons and rocket-propelled grenades, indicating a meticulously planned operation.

According to the video’s creators, Nigerien soldiers offered only limited resistance before attempting to withdraw. They also allege that multiple ambushes were strategically positioned around the base to thwart any retreat or the arrival of reinforcements.

However, the casualty figures put forth by the jihadist groups remain unverified by independent sources. They claim to have killed at least 80 Nigerien service members and destroyed seven armored vehicles, six pick-up trucks, and nine fuel tankers. Furthermore, they assert the capture of twenty pick-up trucks, eighteen machine guns, one sniper rifle, several rocket-propelled grenades, three mortars, and substantial quantities of ammunition.

As of now, these numbers have not been corroborated by Nigerien authorities or any impartial entity. In conflicts of this nature, armed organizations frequently employ their own video productions as propaganda tools. Their objectives include demonstrating operational capability, intimidating adversaries, and bolstering recruitment efforts. Consequently, the figures they disseminate may be exaggerated or incomplete.

Regardless of the precise details, this latest incursion once again underscores the persistent deterioration of the security landscape in the Tillabéry region. Nigerien forces are increasingly confronting sophisticated offensives. Despite strategic adjustments implemented over several years and enhanced military cooperation with new partners, armed groups continue to exhibit a formidable capacity for orchestrating complex assaults against military positions.

The release of this video also carries significant strategic weight. Beyond merely documenting the violence of the engagement, it serves to project the jihadist groups’ power, undermine the morale of security forces, and send a clear message to all stakeholders involved in the broader counter-insurgency efforts across the Sahel.
