Côte d’Ivoire celebrates women’s nation-building legacy in national week ahead of independence day

The Femme Ivoirienne en Politique (FIP) non-profit organization inaugurated the first-ever National Week honoring women who have shaped Côte d’Ivoire, launching the event on July 30 at the Yopougon city hall. This initiative, running from August 1 to 4, 2026, coincides with the country’s 66th independence anniversary.

Under the theme “66 Years of Independence: Women’s Achievements and Future Perspectives,” the week-long program aims to spotlight women’s pivotal role in Côte d’Ivoire’s political, economic, social, and cultural progress. It also seeks to spark meaningful discussions about lingering challenges and actionable solutions.

FIP’s president, Rebecca Yao, emphasized the event’s significance: “This is an opportunity to reflect on the milestones women have achieved since independence, identify unresolved issues, and propose concrete recommendations to strengthen public policies.” The program includes a three-day national symposium at Yopougon’s city hall, featuring an opening panel and sixteen thematic discussions on topics such as female leadership, health, education, economic empowerment, youth, and women’s rights. A dedicated exhibition will also showcase the journeys of trailblazing women alongside successful entrepreneurship initiatives.

The symposium will culminate in a white paper outlining key recommendations, to be submitted to relevant authorities for implementation. The week’s highlight will be the August 4 gala dinner at the Sofitel Hôtel Ivoire, where 66 pioneering women will be honored for their contributions to Côte d’Ivoire’s development since 1960.

Yao also shared her vision for this event to become an annual tradition: “Each year, we’ll revisit the resolutions from the previous edition to track progress and ensure accountability.” Mireille Bamba, Yopougon’s deputy, praised the initiative, reaffirming the support of Mayor Adama Bictogo. Organizers aim to establish this week as a recurring platform for dialogue, reflection, and recognition of women’s indispensable role in nation-building.
