The cholera epidemic in Chad has escalated rapidly, with confirmed cases now exceeding 230, including 13 fatalities. The outbreak, which began in mid-June, has primarily affected the northern province of Hadjer Lamis and the capital city, N’Djamena. Authorities declared the epidemic on July 24 after identifying the first fatalities linked to the disease.

In response, health officials have initiated a large-scale vaccination drive, with over 50,000 doses already administered. However, the campaign faces significant challenges due to limited access to clean drinking water and inadequate sanitation infrastructure—key factors that facilitate the transmission of cholera.

Cholera spreads through contaminated water or food and can be effectively treated with rapid rehydration therapy and antibiotics in severe cases. Without prompt medical intervention, the disease can prove fatal within hours. Chad is not alone in this crisis; neighboring countries such as the Central African Republic, Nigeria, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo have also reported recent cholera outbreaks.
