The Cameroonian government formally launched the Pandemic Fund earlier this week, an international mechanism established to assist nations in preparing for major health risks. The ceremony was led by Public Health Minister Manaouda Malachie. The funding injection of $23.5 million will reinforce the country’s epidemic prevention, detection, and response systems. The initiative operates under the One Health framework, integrating human health, animal health, and ecosystem preservation to address disease emergence drivers more effectively.

Nationwide expansion with targeted health districts

Implementation spans all ten regions of Cameroun, with 42 priority health districts receiving enhanced support. Key focus areas include strengthening epidemiological surveillance, upgrading early warning systems, bolstering laboratory capacities, training healthcare staff, organizing emergency responses, and mobilizing intervention resources. During the launch, the Health Minister underscored that nations equipped with robust laboratories, skilled personnel, and prepared administrations can contain outbreaks more efficiently.

The project is implemented in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the World Bank, and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). Established in 2022 following the Covid-19 pandemic, the Pandemic Fund supports countries in bolstering their capacity for prevention, preparedness, and emergency response. Currently, the mechanism operates in 128 countries, including Cameroun.
