Bodø/Glimt coach targets match control against Union Saint-Gilloise in Champions League clash

Bodø/Glimt head coach Kjetil Knutsen entered the press room at KVDO Arena in Ostend, its seats mostly vacant, with a clear objective in mind. “We’re facing a very strong team,” he admitted, speaking before the crucial third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League. “Their style is physical and direct. We’ve studied their strengths and weaknesses, but we also have our own identity to bring to the pitch. Our strategy is built on control, and we intend to dictate the pace of the game.”

Knutsen, who has led the Norwegian side since early 2018, stressed that his team will not revert to defensive tactics, regardless of the opponent or venue. “We play offensively both home and away. That won’t change against Union Saint-Gilloise. We aim to take the initiative from the first whistle.”

From Europa League draw to Champions League showdown

This won’t be the first time Bodø/Glimt and Union Saint-Gilloise meet. Their last encounter came in October 2024 during the Europa League group stage, ending in a 0-0 stalemate at Brussels’ King Baudouin Stadium. Knutsen recalled that clash but noted how much the Belgian side has evolved since then. “A few players from that match remain, but the team has transformed. They integrate new talent seamlessly, develop them, and sell them at a profit — much like we do. They may not be the biggest club in Europe, but they’ve grown significantly. In Belgium, they’re now among the top two teams alongside Club Bruges, and their progress is impressive.”

The Norwegian manager highlighted the mental side of the upcoming tie. “We know what’s at stake. It’s a knockout round, and every detail matters. We’ve prepared thoroughly, analyzed their recent performances, and tailored our approach accordingly. Our players are ready to take responsibility and execute our game plan.”
