Benin opened its Africa AirBadminton Championships campaign with a 60-37 team relay win over Algeria on Wednesday, September 16 in Entebbe, Uganda. The result has quickly become the talking point of Group A, fuelling debate about whether this Benin side can sustain its momentum and challenge for continental honours.

How the 60-37 unfolded

Benin took control from the opening rubber and never surrendered the lead. Oswald Fano-Dosh and Carlos Miguel Kpanou set the tone with a 15-11 win in the men’s doubles, before Gladys Akakpo and Flora Kpogbemabou stretched the cumulative score to 30-17 in the women’s doubles, handing Benin a 13-point cushion at the halfway stage.

Algeria clawed back some ground in the men’s triples, but the trio of Carlos Miguel Kpanou, Oswald Fano-Dosh and Julien Totin held firm to keep Benin ahead at 45-31. Gladys Akakpo, Blessing Atchade and Flora Kpogbemabou then closed out the tie to seal the 60-37 final score.

Group A picture and the road ahead

The victory puts Benin in a strong position in Group A, which also includes Algeria and Tunisia. Algeria had earlier beaten Tunisia 60-52, meaning Benin’s next fixture against the Tunisians will be decisive for the group standings.

Benin has sent ten players to Entebbe across the team, doubles and triples events. The third edition of the championship brings together 14 nations and more than 120 participants at Aero Beach, and it forms part of the qualification pathway towards the next AirBadminton World Championships.
